Do individuals deserve the right to decide whether or not they should use marijuana to cure themselves? Medical cannabis (also referred to as medical marijuana) has a long history of medicinal use, with evidence dating back to 2,000 B.C. (2010-2012 Presidential Election. 2010). Marijuana is a natural medicine and should be a legal and free without the cost of pharmaceutical companies.
In the United States, federal law outlaws all marijuana use, while permission for medical marijuana varies among states. The United States Supreme Court has ruled in United States v. Oakland Cannabis Buyers' Coop and Gonzales v. Raich that it is the federal government that has the right to regulate and criminalize marijuana, even for medical purposes. (Case Laws, 2011). The U.S.A. could free up alot of extra money to spend on other important issues if marijuana were legal. In the U.S.A., all levels of government (federal, state, and local authorities) participate in the "War on Drugs." Currently, the U.S.A spends billions of dollars every year to chase peaceful people. The taxpayers have to pay for food, housing, health care, attorney fees, court costs, and other expenses to lock these individuals up. (MJ Legal 2002). While marijuana for recreational use is illegal in most parts of the world, its use as a medicine is legal in a number of territories worldwide, including Canada, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Israel, Italy, Finland, and Portugal. Many claims have been advanced asserting smoked marijuana has a value in treating various medical conditions. Some have argued that herbal marijuana is a safe and effective medication and that it should be made available to people who suffer from a number of ailments upon a doctor's recommendation, even though it is not an approved drug. (FDA Press Office., 2006,). The medical marijuana does have several well-documented beneficial effects. Among these are: the health improvement in nausea and vomiting, stimulation of hunger in chemotherapy and AIDS patients, lowered intraocular eye pressure (shown to be effective for treating glaucoma), as well as general analgesic effects (pain reliever). Less confirmed individual studies also have been conducted indicating cannabis is beneficial in a variety of conditions including Multiple sclerosis and depression. (Marjuana Medicine Evaluation Centers, 2009).
Medical marijuana should be free to all medical ill patients. Because, marijuana does grow in nature freely and is a plant so, therefore there should be no charge for its' cure. Marijuana, like tobacco and alcohol, can be abused. But prohibition is expensive and ineffective; education and regulation are better solutions. Regulating sales of marijuana and teaching people the truth about its health effects will allow us to minimize the harms and costs to society. (MJ Legal 2002). The history of marijuana's criminalization is filled with: racism, fear, protection of corporate profits corrupt legislators, personal career advancement and greed. (Guither, P, 2011).
Why is Marijuana Illegal?
If marijuana became legal in the U.S.A, it would free up extra money that could be more beneficial in other areas. If marijuana is given as a free prescription it would be a financial relief on families with the high cost of prescription drugs. Marijuana is a natural medicine that is grown in nature that provides many natural cures. In the U.S.A, has created a system where it is all about making a profit for the corporations. Why is Marijuana Illegal? Marijuana is illegal because it protects the corporate profits, greed and corrupt legislators. Meanwhile, taxpayers are forced to pay billions of dollars to prosecute and incarcerate people for having marijuana.
